Safeguarding Policy

At Wonderland Nursery & Primary School, the safety, dignity and wellbeing of every child are fundamental to our school community.
We are committed to providing an environment in which children are protected from abuse, neglect, exploitation, bullying and other forms of harm, and in which concerns about a child’s welfare are taken seriously.
1. Our Commitment
Every child has the right to learn and participate in school life in a safe, respectful and supportive environment.
Wonderland Nursery & Primary School is committed to:
- Promoting children’s safety and wellbeing
- Treating children with dignity and respect
- Taking concerns about children seriously
- Responding appropriately to safeguarding concerns
- Maintaining appropriate confidentiality
- Providing safe school environments
- Promoting responsible behaviour by staff, visitors and other adults
- Working appropriately with parents and guardians
- Cooperating with relevant authorities where required
2. What Safeguarding Means
Safeguarding includes protecting children from circumstances that may place their safety or wellbeing at risk.
Concerns may involve:
- Physical abuse
- Emotional or psychological abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Neglect
- Exploitation
- Bullying
- Harassment
- Discrimination
- Online or digital risks
- Unsafe environments
- Other conduct that may place a child at risk of harm
A safeguarding concern does not need to be proven before it is reported.
3. Our Responsibility
All members of the school community have a role in protecting children.
Staff and other authorised adults working with children are expected to:
- Behave professionally and appropriately
- Maintain appropriate boundaries
- Treat children respectfully
- Report safeguarding concerns promptly
- Avoid conduct that could place a child at unnecessary risk
- Follow the school’s safeguarding procedures
4. Reporting a Concern
Anyone who has a genuine concern about the safety or wellbeing of a child at Wonderland should report the concern to the school as soon as reasonably possible.
Concerns may relate to something a child has said, something someone has observed, a change in a child’s behaviour, an injury, an online incident or any other circumstance that raises a reasonable concern.
Where appropriate, the school may refer or report serious matters to relevant authorities or other competent bodies.
5. Listening to Children
Children should be able to speak about their concerns in an environment where they feel respected and listened to.
Where a child raises a safeguarding concern, adults should respond calmly, take the concern seriously and avoid making promises of absolute secrecy.
Information should be shared only with people who need it for safeguarding, legal or other legitimate purposes.
6. Staff Conduct
Staff and other adults working with pupils are expected to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
Unacceptable behaviour includes conduct that:
- Harms or humiliates a child
- Exploits a position of trust
- Involves inappropriate physical contact
- Involves inappropriate communication
- Places a child at unnecessary risk
- Is sexually inappropriate
- Encourages secrecy or inappropriate relationships
The school may take appropriate action where staff or other adults are suspected of violating safeguarding expectations.
7. Visitors and Contractors
Visitors and contractors entering areas where children are present may be subject to the school’s visitor and safeguarding procedures.
The school may restrict access to certain areas and require visitors to follow instructions designed to protect pupils.
8. Bullying and Harmful Behaviour
Wonderland does not accept bullying or behaviour that intentionally causes harm, intimidation or humiliation.
Concerns about bullying should be reported to the school so that they can be assessed and addressed appropriately.
9. Online Safety
Children may face risks through websites, social media, messaging platforms, online games and other digital services.
The school seeks to promote responsible digital behaviour and appropriate awareness of online risks.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss online safety with children and to raise concerns with the school when an online incident affects a child’s safety or wellbeing.
10. Photography and Media
Photographs and videos involving pupils must be handled responsibly.
The school seeks appropriate permission for public-facing use of identifiable images of children where required.
Staff, visitors and other persons should not photograph or record children in school without appropriate authorisation.
11. Confidentiality
Safeguarding information will be handled sensitively.
However, confidentiality does not prevent the school from sharing information where doing so is necessary to protect a child, respond to a serious concern, comply with legal obligations or assist an appropriate investigation.
12. Parents and Guardians
Parents and guardians are important partners in safeguarding children.
The school encourages parents and guardians to communicate concerns promptly and to provide accurate emergency and contact information.
Where appropriate, the school will work with parents and guardians to support a child’s safety and wellbeing.
There may be circumstances where information cannot be shared immediately with a parent or guardian because doing so could increase a child’s risk of harm or interfere with an appropriate safeguarding response.
13. Emergency Concerns
If a child is in immediate danger or requires urgent assistance, the appropriate emergency or competent authority should be contacted without unnecessary delay.
The school should also be informed where appropriate.
14. Review of This Policy
The school will review its safeguarding arrangements periodically and may update this policy when necessary.
